The period 1170-1300 saw an intense period of political conflict and change in Iceland’s history as bishops, chieftains, and the Norwegian king struggled against one another to consolidate their power. As part of a larger project to examine pain behaviours and beliefs, I aim to investigate the way in which the Church used religious vision literature as a weapon in this political power game, specifically how an emotional regime of fear, created by the representations of Hell found in these texts, was intended to terrify the secular elite into submission. For the purposes of this presentation, I will focus on Duggals leizla and the particular messages it may convey to an audience of chieftains.
