Translanguaging among the Roma: Everyday Practices, Representation in Literature and Application in Education
Plurilingualism and translanguaging are common among Romani/Gypsy communities. The language repertoire of Roma usually comprises of several languages including Romani, the official language of the country in which they live, and often several other languages (in case of Roma in migration this would be the languages spoken in the country of origin, languages learned in school, English as the global lingua franca, etc.). The talk will start with a discussion on translanguaging practices among Romani communities exemplified by historical and contemporary sources. In the second part, I´ll discuss how plurilingualism and translanguaging are presented in contemporary Romani literature. Finally, educational materials for Romani children applying translanguaging practices will be discussed.
The talk will be in English.
Free admission. All are welcome.
