Ágrip: 1st of September, 2019 marked the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of WWII with the commemorative ceremonies organised in Warsaw. Invited world leaders joined Polish President Andrzej Duda in remembering the tragic war. They delivered their addresses in close proximity to the former Warsaw Ghetto, mentioning, if only in passing, the fate of Polish Jews. What is the place of the Holocaust in commemorations of WWII? How does the present-day discourse differ from commemorative practices in the postwar period? How is this historical event relevant for future pedagogy in the era of climate change? These questions will be answered with a reference to the role of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the uses of the war in Polish popular culture and
current reinterpretations of the war.
