Contemporary scholars tend to invoke the notion of habits (saṃksāras) to explain the theory of karma. Agents might perform right actions, and thereby develop good habits that lead to eventual success for the agent. Alternatively, agents might perform wrong actions, and thereby develop bad habits that lead to eventual failure for the agent. I outline what I take to be the most plausible version of this account. I then argue that even this revised version of the account faces serious objections.
