Ethical Challenges for Physicians in Multicultural Settings
Three examples are illustrative of situations North American or European physicians may face. 1) A pediatrician in the United States cares for children in a local population of Mien immigrants from Laos. A Mien mother brings in her child who has been subjected to a harmful traditional treatment. The physician wonders whether he is required to report child abuse in accordance with the law. 2)  An East African couple brings their 12-year old daughter to a Western physician, requesting that the physician perform ritual genital cutting. They say that if the physician refuses, they will take the child back to their African country where the physician knows the procedure will be carried out by a native person in an unhygienic manner, endangering the girl’s health and possibly even her life. 3)  A Western physician working in a family planning clinic in an African country is told that she must obtain permission from the husbands of women before prescribing or providing contraceptives to them. The physician is aware that some women eagerly seek modern contraception but their husbands would refuse permission.
