Educational Opportunity in the United States:Ideals and Realities

Educational opportunity in the U.S. is significantly unequal, and this inequality stands in sharp contradiction to many of the nation’s founding social and political ideals. In this talk I will recall those ideals, explore the present-day structures and mechanisms of educational unfairness, and argue that the present reality must be held accountable to the nation’s espoused ideals.

Sue Books is a Fulbright professor, visiting this semester from the U.S. where she teaches in the School of Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Her research has focused primarily on issues of schooling and poverty in the U.S., including school funding.
